The Pelican Centre The Pelican Centre in the ARK is a now a recognised leading international authority for precision surgery for colorectal cancers and tumours of the liver. Led by Prof Bill Heald OBE, Mr Brendan Moran, Mr Merv Rees DL and the Basingstoke Team, its expanding role includes other pelvic region cancers: particularly prostate, bladder and kidney cancers, but also pseudomyxoma peritonei, where precision surgery is crucial for long term patient survival and improved quality of life. The ARK provides advanced audiovisual facilities enabling surgeons to share their skills with national and international audiences, via high definition ‘LIVE-LINK’ to Basingstoke Hospital’s operating theatres. Already over 180 English colorectal cancer teams have participated in the National MDT-TME Development Programme here. This programme has had a major impact on colorectal cancer activity and has confirmed the Pelican Centre’s national lead in bowel cancer training and research.

| Solvay Cardiac Research Office |
| The provision of cardiac services in North Hampshire has been increasing exponentially since the opening of the Rotherwick Foundation Cardiac Unit in 2002. This Unit has enabled the Basingstoke Team to pioneer and establish a coronary angiography, angioplasty and pacemaker surgery service within a district general hospital setting. Complimenting this activity has been an active research programme housed on the first floor of the ARK, alongside regional and national ARK-based cardiology seminars. |

| Rheumatology services at BNHFT continue to expand and develop. The greatest area of change has been in the management of Rheumatoid Arthritis and other forms of Inflammatory Arthritis with biologic drugs, particularly inhibitors of tumour-necrosis factor. We have taken part in National Registers of R A outcome and continue with research examining early prognostic markers for long-term outcome. More recently we have become involved with pharmacological studies examining response to alternative biological treatments for R A. This is alongside continuing patient education and help-line services that run from the ARK. |
